AUSTRALIA WINS BIG AT THE 2007 QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS

GARRETT PARKES, SALLY FITZGIBBONS, JADSON ANDRE AND TEAM AUSTRALIA CROWNED WORLD CHAMPIONS IN PORTUGAL

In a thrilling day for junior surfing, team Australia and two of its young stars took home gold medals on the final day of the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Costa de Caparica, Portugal.

Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons and Garrett Parkes are the new Quiksilver ISA World Junior Champions in the Girls Under 18 division and the Boys Under 16’s respectively, while their squad blew away the competition to take a second consecutive Team World Championship.   Brazil’s Jadson André scored the gold in the Under 18 Boys and led his nation to a silver in the overall team race.

The final day offered solid 3-5 foot (1-1.5 meter) waves – the best surf of the 8 day event - and each final featured spectacular showdowns at this, the “Junior Olympics of Surfing”.

For the first time in surfing’s history, the ISA judging panel included 8 judges.   During the final two days of competition, all 8 logged in scores  with the top and two lowest scores being dropped. The feedback for this innovation was entirely positive.

André, like all three individual winners, powered through the repechage rounds to make it to the final.  He took an early lead with huge turns in the powerful waves and outlasted fellow finalists Chris Friend (Australia), Charlie Brown (Brazil) and Cory Arrambide (USA).  André was in strong form throughout the event and his self assurance never wavered. “I’m very happy because when I traveled to Portugal I told my family I was going to win,” said Andre.   “This was not easy and the fact that I got put into the repechage did not affect my confidence.  I knew I couldn’t hesitate and everything went right.”

Parkes, an electrifying fair haired surfer that viewers online compared to Mick Fanning, was at his absolute best in the final of the Under 16 Boys.  He locked in the highest single wave score of all of the finals (9.6 out of 10) where he did a series of vertical turns followed by an aerial reverse in the shorebreak.

“I’m over the moon, just frothing,” said Parkes. Parkes’s father in Australia recently suffered a stroke and the win was an emotional one.  “I dedicate my win to my Dad who was watching my heats on the webcast.  He’s the man,” he said.

Parkes finished ahead of silver medalist and fellow Mini Gun (of the Quiksilver’s upcoming DVD Young Guns 3) Tahitian Tamoroa McComb, while New Zealand’s Matt Hewitt and Australia’s Davey Cathels won bronze and copper.

Fitzgibbons avenged her last second defeat at last year’s event in Maresias, Brazil (she got silver then), by dominating the final of the Under 18 Girls this time around.  The silky smooth surfer admitted that her disappointment in Brazil was a motivating factor in her win.  “Last year I was winning but then went down in the last 20 seconds of the event,” Fitzgibbons said.   “It was a devastating loss, but it made me focus on surfing to the best of my ability this year.  The level of girls surfing has been so high here and it made me lift my performance.”

Fitzgibbons finished ahead silver medalist and teammate, Laura Enever while Sage Erickson (USA) Paige Hareb (New Zealand) took the bronze and copper.

Australia saw five of its surfers make the finals today and the team ran away with the team title for the second consecutive year.  Australia’s coach and 1994 ISA world champ, Sasha Stocker, was proud of his young surfers.  “Our team has worked very hard for this and I’m very happy with with our victory because all of the teams surfed so well.”

Brazil won the team silver followed by Hawaii’s bronze and New Zealand’s copper.

Hawaii won the ISA Aloha Cup tag team contest followed by Australia, France and South África.

In addition to their gold medals, André and Fitzgibbons also received coveted spots in the trials for the 2007 Quiksilver Pro France, the 2008 Pro Australia and the 2007 Roxy Pro Hawaii and 2008 Roxy Pro Australia where they will have a chance to surf against the likes of Kelly Slater, Andy Irons, Chelsea Hedges and Stephanie Gilmore.  Parkes win earned him 2500 dollars in credit towards entry fees of ASP events.

The entire event was notable for its exuberance and vitality and the sentiment on the beach was that this was the best ever event in the history of junior surfing.  Each team enthusiastically waved their nations’ colorful flags on the beach for each heat and, by the end, many surfers were seen in the uniforms of other teams – evidence of the strong friendships forged here.

Adding to the positive vibes, the host team of Portugal also donated a surfboard to a competitor from Morocco, Amine El Jaffy, who could not afford one, and came to Portugal without competition equipment.

ISA President Fernando Aguerre awarded the surfers their medals in the event’s closing ceremony.  He was ecstatic about the success of this international event where everyone involved shared the ISA spirit of working together for a better world.

“Congratulations to all the competitors and teams for all their efforts in Portugal,” said Aguerre.

“The participants and judges did an excellent job. I would also like to thank Quiksilver for its strong support of junior surfing and the Caparica Surfing Club for its help in hosting the event. With great pleasure I announce we will be back in Portugal in October 2008 for the ISA World Games.”

The location of the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships has not yet been chosen but Aguerre revealed locations in France, Costa Rica and Ecuador are all in the running, with the final decision to be announced by June 15, 2007.

Team Australia going for gold with seven surfers still in the contest on final day

Under 16 boys

Garret Parkes (Byron Bay NSW) managed to have a rest day as all the action in the under 16 boys was in the repercharge heats. Garret is well placed and surfing well and will be looking forward to tomorrows final day.

Davey Cathels (Narrabeen NSW) and Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc VIC) had a very busy day contesting three repercharge heats each to remain alive in the championships. Both surfers will now contest the repercharge final.

Rosewall said “I feel extremely good right now. It finally feels like I have found my feet in this competition. Really pumped to surf tomorrow and do my county proud”.

Under 18 girls

Laura Enever (Narrabeen NSW) and Ashleigh Smith (Cabarita NSW) have maintained their winning run, progressing through to last round and vying for a spot in the final.

Smith said I’m super stoked to have gotten this far in the competition. It’s been an amazing experience, really pumped for finals day, hope to be on the podium with a medal”

Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa NSW) had a very busy day having to surf three times through the repercharge rounds to keep her chances alive for a spot in the final.

Under 18 boys

Chris Friend (Alexandra Headland QLD) is still in the competition but he also managed a rest day as all the action was in the repercharge rounds.

Ellis Ericson (Byron Bay NSW) was the only member of Team Australia knocked out of the competition today. Ellis failed to progress out of the round 7 repercharge heat.

Tag Team

Team Australia placed second in their tag team semi final behind South Africa. Final of the tag team will be run after the completion of the three individual world finals.

Overall

With seven surfers in contention on the final day, Team Australia should retain their “champion nation” title and also has strong chances in all three individual titles. Currently Team Australia are on 7105 points with Hawaii the next best placed nation on 5172 points with Brazil third on 5168 points.

Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc VIC) also remains alive after surfing through his repercharge round with a second place.

James Woods (Coolongatta QLD) dropped out of the competition after failing to progress past round 4.

Overall

Competition at the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships has stepped up a level.

In the under 16 division Byron Bay surfer Garrett Parkes and Davey Cathels (Narrabeen NSW) matched up in their round four heats today. Parkes shone from the start and let everyone know he is a force to be reckoned with at this year’s event picking of the best waves of the 20min heat to advance to the next round with a heat total of 13.40.

“I felt like I was really well prepared for that heat. I felt confident in the water and wasn’t worried what the other surfers were doing. I just hope I can keep this flow going” Parkes said.

Davey Cathels, Parkes’ roommate during the event found himself in a difficult position mid way through the heat and sadly could not find the score he needed and was forced into the second chance (repercharge)draw.

Current Australian U/16 Champion Todd Rosewall (Jan Juc) and South African born Aussie James Woods (Coolangatta) also put in solid performances but all three will now contest the repercharge rounds to keep their chances alive in the championships.

In the U/18 girls Division Australian surfers Laura Enever (Narrabeen NSW),Ashleigh Smith (Cabarita Beach NSW) and current Australian Champion Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa NSW) advanced into the next qualifying round of the event. Smith found her true form in her round four heat, combining several carving turns and great wave selection to take out the heat followed closely in second by fellow team mate Fitzgibbons.

U/18 boys surfers Chris friend (Alexandra Headland) and Ellis Ericson (Byron Bay) also matched up in their round 4 heat. Friend opened his account with a nine point ride and followed up with another good scoring wave to advance into the next heat with a combined heat total of 16.33. Team mate Ellis Ericson (Byron Bay NSW) was not as fortunate being pushed into third position by the talented Brazilian surfer Jadson Andre. Unfortunately Chris Salisbury (Newport NSW) was relegated to the repercharge rounds as well after placing third in his round 4 heat.

Tomorrow’s event schedule is likely to see U/18 Girls Qualifying rounds continue followed by the U/16 and U/18 Boys repercharge rounds.

Day 3 -Team Australia digs deep to maintain strong position in event.

All Australian surfers took to the water again today. Leading the way was Ellis Ericson (Byron Bay), Chris Friend (Alexandra Headland) and Chris Salisbury (Newport) who all advanced to the next round with smart progressive surfing. Current U/18 Australian Champion Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island) was the first Australian surfer to be sent to the repercharge round. The wave starved heat gave Vanner very little opportunities to surf his way out of position four.

It was a day of strong results for all four U/16 Team Australia boy surfers. Davey Cathels (Narrabeen) proved the saying ‘never give up’ when after a interference call left him needing a 5 plus ride to advanced to the next round. With three seconds to go, Cathels snagged a right hander which he blasted three slashing carves to post a 7.0 ride, moving him into the next qualifying round. Cathels showed true determination and was totally adrenalized from his win.

“To be that close to getting knocked back to the reps and getting the score I needed was amazing”, Cathels said. “ I just dug deep and never gave up. To get that wave in the last seconds was the best feeling ever. I am so pumped right now.”

Our Australian U/18 girls put on a great display of surfing in their qualifying round 2 heats today. Laura Enever (Narrabeen), Ashleigh Smith (Cabarita Beach), Amy Hart (Mermaid Beach) and Sally Fitizgibbons (Gerroa) all progressed to the next round with some amazing surfing.

Current U/18 Girl Australian Champion Sally Fitzgibbon showed she was a good chance for a finals finish with some of the most progressive female surfing seen during the event. Sally again posted the highest combined heat total of the day.

“I was felling really well in that last heat and managed to get some good scoring waves. The conditions are proving really tough and changed a lot due to the extreme tidal change. The girl’s competition looks really tough and all the girls are surfing at a very high standard. I’m really enjoying the atmosphere of this whole event.” Sally said

SURF IMPROVES FOR DAY TWO OF QUIKSILVER ISA WORLD JUNIORS

Seasoned competitor Sally Fitzgibbons (Gerroa, NSW, Australia) did not let the hassles of international travel stop her from tearing apart the waves of Costa de Caparica on day 2 of the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.  Fitzgibbons, silver medalist at this event in Brazil last year, endured a 42 hour trip from Australia to Portugal and arrived in Lisbon without her luggage.  “I still haven’t gotten my clothes,” said Fitzgibbons.  “But I had fun in my heat. I found a couple of good lefthand runners.”

The surf improved markedly today from yesterday’s generally small and windy conditions.  Clean 2-3 feet (.5-1 meter) waves were on offer in the morning and the breeze stayed light most of the day.  Fitzgibbons surfed aggressively yet smoothly  and her total heat score of (17.67 out of 20) was higher than any other competitor – male or female.

Fitzgibbons teammate, Laura Enever (North Narrabean, NSW Australia), also had a great heat.  “The waves were a lot better today so it was a good start to the competition for us in the girls division.”

On the Aussie boys side, Teale Vanner (Kangaroo Island, SA, Australia) and Garret Parkes earned impressive wins in their respective divisions.  “Our team is feeling good, but there’s still a long way to go,” said Vanner.

Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships - All Team Australia Members On Track In Under 18 & Under 16 Boys Divisions

Monday, 7 May 2007

17-year old Charles
Martin of France, posted the highest single wave score of the day, (9.17 out of 10 points) and the highest heat score (16.17 out of 20) of the Under 18 Boys at the 2007 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships today in Costa de Caparica, Portugal. "Today's surfing was difficult,” said Martin. “But I
was lucky to win the last heat of the day, going out in the high tide.
I feel very confident, but I am also very much aware of the quality of
 my rivals.”

While the conditions proved challenging for all of the surfers, many competitors still managed to stand out. Australia’s Chris Salisbury, 17, (Newport Beach, NSW) convincingly won his first round heat with smooth backside surfing. Salisbury, competing in the Quiksilver ISA World Junior Championships for the first time, said he was enjoying the international flavour and camaraderie of the event. “It’s really fun to stay with all of the other competitors from around the world and meet everyone,” said Salisbury. “The first few days have been a full on froth fest.”

The under 18 boys and the under 16 boys completed their first round with all of the members of Team Australia progressing straight through to round 2.

The under 18 girls division will hit the water for the first time tomorrow.
